A short spiel about the world of the Sirens

I promised everyone a new blog soon and well, here it is. I'm having some technical problems in getting my files posted so bear with me but you will soon be seeing the actual stories I've been talking about. If need be, I'll transcribe them bit by bit into one of these blogs for you all to see. They may be in bits and pieces but they will be there. I will let everyone know what's going on as soon as I do. In the meantime, here's a little blurb about the world where my series about the Sirens' Detective Agency takes place.

While the story may be set on Earth, things are a little different. The mythical and the fantastical have existed alongside us as long as the world has been in existence, however, modern society has chosen to ignore, destroy, and shun as much of this as possible. Normal humans would just as soon pretend nothing out of the ordinary exists. The biggest representation of this fantastical world would be the paranormals, the non human races that have been quietly living alongside their human counterparts.

"Paranormal" in this series is a catch all term for any race that is not human, however, this can be divided into separate categories. The first would be the mutants. You can call them supes, supernaturals, mutants, or by their proper name, Homo Mutatis (changed human). They also go by paranormals, as they were the first group to actually earn the title. They have always existed among us. Until around 1900 (The Industrial Revolution) their numbers were small. Ever since, their numbers have been growing exponentially and humans, which the paranormals generally refer to as Mundanes, are starting to get afraid that these people will take over the world someday.

These people are essentially humans born with special "abilities" that mark them apart from society. These can be anything from a physical mutation, such as odd skin, hair, or eye coloration, extra limbs, or odd physicality (tails, gills, etc.) to a psychic ability, such as telepathy or telekinesis. Anyone can be a mutant because their abilities are not always apparent at birth. Normally, these things manifest between the ages of 11 and 21 but can lay dormant for as long as it takes for genetics to decide to kick in. There is no rhyme or reason to what powers a person is born with or to whom they are born. Two humans can produce a mutant just as easily as a mutant and a human or two mutants. The only real concrete fact is that the more mutant DNA you have, the more powerful your mutation will most likely be in the long run. Essentially, since this is genetics, it is just as random and just as unpredictable.

Mutants are the most prominent of all the paranormals and they are the only one that is officially recognized when the series begins. Eventually, the series will contain vampires, lycans, fae, and other preternatural creatures but I don't want to give too much away so those groups will have to wait for a description until I've gotten more posted. To put it shortly, the Sirens are a group of paranormal women who are Private Investigators. They are taking on the supernatural, the unexplained, and dealing with the other paranormal races. The leader of this group is Alexandra Lee and I will eventually be getting profiles up on her and all the main characters of the series. I know this isn't exactly what I wanted to do for this post but I was going to do this little spiel eventually anyway.

I hope this isn't too disappointing and look forward to showing all of you what I can really do! :) That's all for now but there will be more coming soon.
